understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

wedding anniversaries,birthdays

My elder daughter was born on 6.2 (6th Feb). My parent in laws wedding anniversary was 6.2. My younger daughter was born on 2.6 (2nd June). My parents wedding anniversary was 2.6. Both natural births. We never forgot wedding anniversaries in our house!

Shared Past Event

A horse fell through the roof of my garage flattening my car, 25 years later I randomly met and became good friends with the owner of the horse without realising the connection. I come from Birmingham, in 1982 I went to University in Swansea to study zoology / psychology and in my third academic year I lived with a fellow student in a virtually derelict property called Llanerch Farm. The farm was set back a distance off the road and had stables associated with it where local kids kept horses. Because of a severe slope the stables were on 2 levels: I kept my mini in the lower stable using it as a garage while the horse feed was kept in the upper stable. After visiting home for a weekend in early 1985 I returned to find a hole in the roof of my garage and my car roof collapsed: a horse had wandered into the feed store fallen through the rotten floorboards and landed spread eagled on it. I thought nothing more of it, claimed on my insurance, graduated, moved back to Birmingham and then London. In 2009 I moved with my family to The Gower, a peninsular near Swansea.

Surprise meeting in the Peak District

My then partner and I were walking in the Peak District across a large field in a very isolated spot. In the distance we could see people walking towards us, one with a long white beard. As they approached I could see it was Carole and her husband who I used to work with some time ago. It seemed a real coincidence as we both came from Reading and live quite near each other but I hadn't seen them for some time.

Credit Card numbers

I have two credit cards, one with my regular bank and one is a store credit card. They both have the same last four digits - it can be quite confusing as mostly on-line or on statements the last four numbers are the ones quoted and I have to remember which card I used. I would love to know the mathematical chances of this happening

my case

arriving back in england after a long flight I was waiting for my case to arrive on the bagage conveyer belt. I saw it coming, and I reached out for it.The man standing next to me said "I think that is my case" I said "I don't think so pointing out that it has my name on it G.Cox.He said this IS my case,my name is G Cox. It's then I realize that although this looks like my case I didn't have my name written on my case. So the man standing next to me has the same name as me and a case almost exactly the same as mine. Yours truly Graham Cox

Two songs

During the past few weeks on the radio I heard two obscure songs from the 80s that I remembered and liked. I subsequently purchased these songs namely Drivers Seat by Sniff N The Tears and Waiting for a train by Flash and the Pan. Last week on Chris Evans breakfast show he played two requested songs requested by another listener back to back. Yes the two songs were the same obscure ones I had purchased. Strange but true !

Marina 7

I was on holiday four years ago in Blaengwinfi,a VERY small village in Wales. Borrowed a book by my fave author in the tiny (!) library. Was half way through it and had to take it back! When I got home, my next door neighbour,Sean, had bought me the exact same book !!!!!!!!!!! He knew I loved that particular Author. I was THRILLED ! - how about THAT! Mac.7.

South Pacific

In 1963, whilst serving in a destroyer in the Far East, we visited Tahiti. Later in a bar in Papetee, I was introduced to a middle aged Englishman who was obviously enjoying his stay on the island. It transpired that he regularly "wintered" in the Pacific with his elderly mother before returning to UK in the spring. He said he lived in Cockermouth, and I replied that I knew nothing about the town, except that my wife's bridesmaid lived there, and her (then) maiden name was Wylie. Imagine my astonishment when he said " I sold my previous house to the Wylies"! No connection between two total strangers meeting by chance thousands of miles away in the middle of the Pacific. Some coincidence! Regards, Gerry Burnan Cdr RN (rtd)

A coincidence about coincidences

I was driving to see my brother-in-law and discussed with my wife whether to send Professor Spiegelhalter a coincidence (or two) with which I have been involved. During lunch my brother-in-law said that a former pupil of his called Spiegelhalter had been talking about coincidences on the Today programme, and that he had also known Professor Spiegelhalter's father and uncle and been taught by his grandfather. The coincidence which I had been intending to send involved a bet when I was about 14. My family did not bet but heard from a friend about a clergyman who was once something of a gambler but had given this up as unsuited to his cloth. One night being unable to sleep this Clergyman took to thinking about the Derby and falling asleep dreamt that a horse with the initial letter TUL would win not only the Derby but the three races preceeding it. We heard of this after Tulyar had indeed won three races but before the Derby. All of us put money on it and it made us a boat, and a record player and other things that we had not dreamt of affording.

Chance meeting in London with friend from Australia

I lived in Australia for 3 years and had a regular hairdresser. When we had been back in London for about 6 months we were walking through Bond St tube station. Coming towards me was my old hairdresser. We passed without a word but when I told my husband who it was, he said I should have said something. We turned back and started walking back towards the platforms and found he had done the same thing and was coming back to see us. What are the chances of a meeting like that?
