understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

The Kuala Lumpur Connection

In 2003 I was asked by my friend Luke to 'best man' at his wedding later that year. I duly accepted, and also agreed to organise his 'stag party' (which I had decided should be a surprise, and involve a few days abroad). This obviously meant I needed to plan things several months in advance (to give people chance to arrange flights and book time off work etc). This was going to be a little trickier than normal to organise given that I was going to be taking an eight month trip 'back packing' my way around the world. Fortunately I was able to obtain E-mail addresses for all invitees and took a contact list with me (with a view to organising the party during my travels).

Meanwhile, another friend of mine (a Malaysian, now living in London) told me I should visit Kuala Lumpur (her home city) during my trip. She was due to be visiting family there around the same time as me (a coincidence in itself) and suggested that if the dates matched, that we might be able to meet up. We kept in touch via E-mail, and closer to the time agreed a date.

old friend's car

On 24 September 2010 driving north on the A1, I stopped for a break at a roadside cafe. I parked the yellow Peugeot 107 and went straight to the 'ladies'. Later at the snacks counter I was interested by the woman being served before me. Whe she glanced round we recognised each other from forty years before when we were friends, having met at primary school long before that. We had since moved to different parts of the country and lost touch. We had twenty minutes excitedly catching up and exchanging contact details before we each had to resume our journeys. Walking out together, she said 'I must show you my car. I had fun parking it beside its twin.' She had parked her yellow Peugeot 107 beside mine.

Birthday coincidence

Coincidence cousins On the 8th March 1982 my first wife gave birth in the main maternity unit in Rochdale Hospital to my one and only child, a son who as it happens was born six weeks premature. Due to the fact that he was a premature baby he was taken to the special care baby unit where he was placed in an incubator until he was well enough to be placed in a cot before gaining enough weight to be allowed home, nothing much unusual here? However, five years later on Sunday the 8th March 1987 whilst celebrating my sons 5th birthday, my elder sister called to say that my twin sister had been rushed into hospital and had consequently given birth to her one and only child a son who was born six weeks premature. On enquiring to their whereabouts and welfare I was informed that they were in the main maternity unit in Rochdale hospital, not unusual as we all lived in the Rochdale area. Therefore, post my son’s birthday celebrations, and thinking what a coincidence this was starting to develop into, my twin sister giving birth to a baby six weeks premature the same as my son, and on the same date.

OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD

I live in a village near Bristol and occasionally had a drink with the local decorator in the local club. In Jan/Feb 2008 I holidayed in New Zealand. Walking down street in Queenstown and came across my drinking companion with his wife. Neither of us had any idea the other was going to NZ. Quite a surprise!

Christmas Carols Coincidence

On Christmas morning 2011 the television was on in another room. My daughter suggested we put some Christmassy music on so I fired up my laptop and inserted my CD of 'Favourite Christmas Songs'. The first track came on which is John Lennon's Happy Xmas - my son went into the room where the television was on, and not only was the same song playing, but it was playing at exactly the same place in the song - stereo from TV to CD. Amaxing!

It's amazing what you can find in a ladies handbag!

I live in Sidcup, enjoy watercolour painting and am always looking for new places to paint. A number of years ago whilst on a summer break in Herefordshire visiting my parents who had retired to the picturesque village of Weobley, my husband and I decided to drive around an area on the Welsh borders in the Black Hills. After some hours, we were thinking of returning to my parent’s house. With one last look on the map, I picked out a place high up in the hills near Dorstone, which showed a National Trust site known as King Arthur’s Stone. This is a stone age burial chamber set high on a hill overlooking the Wye valley and Hay On Wye. We drove up a steep track and reached the top as another car passed us on its way down. We parked our car in a tiny clearing in front of the stone mound and looked around. We were the only people there on this late summer afternoon. I got out of the car and stepped onto a hard object which was in the long grass. When I looked down I discovered it was a ladies handbag which was in the style of a saddle bag. I picked it up out of the grass and held it for a few minutes not wanting to open it, thinking that the owner might come back any minute.

Many coincidences in my life lead me to believe that I am a witch!

1. My eldest daughter, gave birth to my grandaughter on 4th November 1996. My younger daughter gave birth to my grandson on 4th November 2004. My niece gave birth to my great niece on 4th November 2009. This means that both my husband and his brother, have daughters who gave birth on November 4th. As you can imagine, none of the children are too happy about sharing their birthday with 2 other members of the family. Not only that, my younger daughter was born on her father's birthday, 28th February. 2. This week I was having a new washing machine installed by a delivery company. I live in Hornchurch, Essex and the company delivers all over the country. When I asked them where they were going next, they said Upminster, which is the next town to us. So that I could direct them to use the best route, I asked which road, and the said The !!!!, so I said Oh, my friend lives there. They said Number !!! which is actually my best friend's address. Amazingly she was having an entirely different make of fridge/freezer installed by them on their next call.

IRISH CONNECTION

In August 1986, I was a corporal service in the 2nd Rep Paratroop Regiment of the French Foreign Legion stationed in Mayotte just off the Reunion Islands. Unfortunately I was arrested and convicted by the Mayor of Mayotte (hands up I was guilty) of assaulting a local man and was sentenced to 3 months in the Reunion Island jail as an example. On arrival, I found I was the only European white man in a jail holding 2,000. After a week, I was joined by a white German. A few days later an Irishman - Pat - joined us. When chatting with Pat, he mentioned that he had been born in Duplin but spent his Summer holidays as a boy in Carlow. He then explained that he spent his time in small hamlet called Boris. He added that through the holidays he was looked after by a young girl called Elizabeth Burne - who is my mother! My sentence was reduced (my regiment was returning home) and Pat was waiting for me on my release. We called my mother and he spoke to her and she was the same woman who had looked after him in Boris. What are the odds on meeting someone in a remote African jail who knew my mother?

The world is a small place

I went to work in Canada 3000 miles from EnglandI I met 2 young men who had met and shared a flat;a Scot & an Englishman. I went out ,first with one and then the other. The Scot turned out to be the son of my Aunt in Scotland "best Friend". The Englishman's Father Umpired Cricket matches in the West country in which a cousin of my Father played . So Scotland & the West Counrty linked, the people having all originated in The North . I was born in London. The Englishman in Plymouth.

Family Birthday Coincidences

My grandparents had three daughters. Each of which had three children. Each daughter had a daughter born on the same date over a 10 year period. For the eldest it was her eldest child, for the middle daughter it was her middle child, and for the youngest daughter it was her youngest child.
