understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
On 24 September 2010 driving north on the A1, I stopped for a break at a roadside cafe. I parked the yellow Peugeot 107 and went straight to the 'ladies'. Later at the snacks counter I was interested by the woman being served before me. Whe she glanced round we recognised each other from forty years before when we were friends, having met at primary school long before that. We had since moved to different parts of the country and lost touch. We had twenty minutes excitedly catching up and exchanging contact details before we each had to resume our journeys. Walking out together, she said 'I must show you my car. I had fun parking it beside its twin.' She had parked her yellow Peugeot 107 beside mine.
