understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I lived in Australia for 3 years and had a regular hairdresser. When we had been back in London for about 6 months we were walking through Bond St tube station. Coming towards me was my old hairdresser. We passed without a word but when I told my husband who it was, he said I should have said something. We turned back and started walking back towards the platforms and found he had done the same thing and was coming back to see us. What are the chances of a meeting like that?
