The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

Chance meeting on holiday - twice !

We went to visit Polperro on a day trip from our holiday cottage in Foy. On walking down to the harbour we heard a familiar voice. It was Steve who introduced us as partners over 30 years ago. He had all his family with him and we had a good chat at the pub. We then went off for a coastal walk and stopped in a small bay for coffee on the return journey and met them again. One week prior to this I had met steve at a cricket match. He had just come back off holiday and had no idea he was going on a surprise holiday arranged by his daughter in Polperro.

She said she lived in Africa, I replied that I know someone who also lives in Africa

In the mid 80s, while on a flight to London I started a conversation with the woman beside me. When she mentioned she lived in Africa, I told her I knew someone who at that time lived in Africa but I said "you probably don't know him". It was evident she thought I made a ridiculous remark but having experienced a number of odd number of coincidences in my life it wasn't as ridiculous as she imagined. Seeing her reaction, I said "Oh you probably don't know him, he lives in Ghana". "Oh" she replied, "I live in Ghana". "Well" I said, "he lives in a fairly remote area". "I also live in a remote area". I couldn't remember the name of the area so I said that the person I knew worked for the WHO as a bush pilot. "My husband", she replied clearly shocked "is also a pilot for the WHO. Your friend isn't by chance X?" "Yes" I said "x is the brother of a friend of mine". The woman went on to say that x and her husband were best friends and she knew all the details of where he grew up. CC

CARS

In Nov 2004, I went to a garage to buy a new car. There were 2 left. I was given the choice of blue or silver - blue was DGX, silver was DGY. I got the blue. In Dec 2011, i sold something on ebay to a lady in Liverpool. She asked me to deliver it to her mother in law in the next town to me, which I did - only to find the silver car I'd not chosen all those years agoi sitting on her driveway. She'd also bought it from new. Oh yes, we both have only had one problem with said cars - squeaky brakes......

Wedding Cheat

My friend's ex partner Neil had got back in touch with her and they re-started their relationship albeit secretly as he was still living with the woman he had left my friend for. He was supposed to be marrying this new woman. I never trusted him and did not think for a moment he would leave his new girlfriend for my friend..he was just stringing her along. My friend was convinced his intentions were good. One Friday she phoned to say the two of them had booked a hotel for that night and that he was set to leave his girlfriend and return home. The next day I had to take my daughter to a party which meant driving though a town I very rarely visit. As we approached the centre I saw signs for the register office from a distance and I turned to a mutual friend and joked ' Could you imagine if Neil was outside getting married? ' As we got nearer to the register office I couldn't believe my eyes. Neil was infact outside the register office waiting to get married¬!! I phoned my friend. Neil had spent the night with her and dropped her home at 9am that morning.

Directions

Many years ago I was going to my Divorce hearing in Birmingham with my friend.Neither of us had any idea where the court was where the hearing was taking place. As we stepped off the train we saw this gentleman and asked him if he knew. he gave us directions and went on his own way. Imagine my surprise, when in court later, the Judge was the same gentleman that had directed us.

Coincidences

My whole life has been determined by significant coincidences ( I like to think that it is some kind of energy convergence). Each significant coincidence is always preceded by a significant event either in my personal or business life. I am open minded about all this stuff but do look out for these things now whenever I am involved in decisions. It almost sounds as though I am superstitious but I am not. Things just happen.

Holiday meeting...

Me and my brother went to Callao Salvaje in Tenerife for the first time and walked along a dark unlit coastal path to the next resort down and went to a bar which we stayed at until closing. As we were the last ones there the manager spoke to us as he was closing up and offered to give us a lift back to our hotel as it was in the place he had his apartment. He spoke of his daughters looking at the clear starry skies and so on and I always remebered his four wheel drive vehicle with an inclination level thing on the dash.He was Irish descent. Forward about 15 maybe more years and me and my brother are in a group on a lads holiday in Benidorm and on the first morning I go to see our tour rep,the others too drunk from the previous night to bother. She was very chatty and I relayed the above story when she told me she used to live in Tenerife. After hearing about our lift and exchanging facts it turned out to be her dad who gaves us a lift in Tenerife and she was one of the daughters he mentioned who watched the starry skies from the roof of the pub.I was gobsmacked and went to tell my brother who was equally amazed...

Dreams

I have had lots of meaningful dreams but two tend to stick in my mind. I dreamt that the husband of an employee of mine would get his job back. He had been out of work following redundancy for many months. As soon as I saw her the next day I told her what I dreamt. Within half an hour she got a call from her husband who had been invited for an interview at his old place of work. He got the job. I dreamt that I was sitting at the front of a plane flying to Ireland ( we go on cricket tours to Ireland) and I turned round and realised the whole cricket club were on the plane. I asked where we they were all going and they said to a funeral. The next day I was informed that the club secretary had died suddenly of a heart attack.

Medical Coincidence

Last week I went to hospital for a colonoscopy (everything OK). The next day I phoned my brother, who lives 200 miles away, because I hadn't had time to let him know beforehand. It turned out that he'd had a colonoscopy on the same day and, within half an hour, at the same time.

American Dad

I live in the USA. My father was a surgeon who was well known in an area of about one hundred miles in any direction from my very small hometown. Owing to our unusual surname, I was forever meeting people who would ask, "Oh, your name is 'Doe?' Are you related to Dr. 'John Doe,' the surgeon?" This occurred from early childhood onward. When I was in my thirties, I moved eight-hundred miles away to a new part of the country. I was there several months when I thought, This is one place where I'll never be asked that old, familiar question. That evening, I attended a gathering of a nationally-known social club where I was approached by a woman who had just become a member. We introduced ourselves, and she asked, "Oh, your name is Doe? Are you related to Dr. John Doe, the surgeon?" It turned out that she was born and raised in the small town I was from. Her father had done some work for my father. We also learned that we had some acquaintances from that area in common, and that we'd grown up just a few miles from one another although we attended different schools.
