understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Many years ago I was going to my Divorce hearing in Birmingham with my friend.Neither of us had any idea where the court was where the hearing was taking place. As we stepped off the train we saw this gentleman and asked him if he knew. he gave us directions and went on his own way. Imagine my surprise, when in court later, the Judge was the same gentleman that had directed us.

In the late eighties my husband and I went on holiday to Turkey. We decided to visit Bodrum to see the castle. We popped into a small cafe for a drink and two friends from England came walking up the road and had a drink with us. They had taken a day trip from the resort they were staying at. Neither of us knew we had taken a holiday, but we had both decided to see the castle on the same day.
