understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

Family connections

About 27 years ago I was working at a software house in London, preparing a bid for a contract with the Navy. The Navy contract officer was based at the Admiralty Research establishment at Portland, near Weymouth. My sister - who I had rather lost touch with and hadn't spoken to for a couple of years was also working at the establishment. Anyway, one day I phoned the establishment and asked for the extension number of the contract officer - the switchboard operator clearly misheard the extension number, because my sister answered the phone (I didn't know her extension number, so no scope for a psychological slip on my part). After some mutual surprise, we chatted and she informed me that she had just found out that she was going to be a mum ... very spooky.

Breakage coincidence

My wife and I were visiting my elderly mother in Eastbourne a week ago, where she has lived in the same house for 27 years. The house was not new when she moved there, so both her downstairs and upstairs toilets have been there longer than that. I had to take my mother to the local GP's surgery that morning to have a leg wound dressed. Before leaving the house, I used the upstairs toilet but when I flushed the toilet, the handle broke. Removing the cistern lid, I saw that the plastic arm connecting the handle to the flushing mechanism had snapped. I told my mother about this and we both agreed that this was just bad luckand that it had clearly just worn out after so many years. We set off for the surgery, leaving my wife at my mother's house. While in the GP's waiting room, I received a text from my wife saying that she had just used the downstairs toilet, prior to going shopping, and that when she flushed the toilet, the handle had broken! This was within an hour of the handle of the upstairs' toilet breaking.

One Road

Between the ages of about 4 and 12 I lived in Mayfield Road, Weybridge in Surrey. This was a road with I guess around 30 houses. At the age of 25 we moved to a house in Sutton Coldfield near Birmingham. When we got to know our next door neighbours, we discovered that she had also lived in Mayfield Road, Weybridge, and what is more she recalled my elder sister. A few years later we got to know another couple in Sutton Coldfield and she had also lived in Mayfield Road, Weybridge but did not recall any of our family. Pat

A chain of eleven coincidences

I went on holiday to Crete with a student group in 1961. I was eighteen. We went to Knossos. It was very touristy. We persuaded our driver to take us somewhere less crowded. We drove 40 miles down the coast to a temple complex which was completely deserted, apart from an englishman aged about 35 and his pre-raphaelite-looking wife and two young children. We briefly exchanged greetings. Six months later, the same englishman climbed a stile into our garden in our isolated holiday house in Snowdonia where I was staying with a university friend. He said he was lost and asked me the way to the village of Croesor. I recognized him and invited him in for a cup of tea. We got talking. He lived in Hampstead. So did I. He was the son of German jewish emigrants who had come to Britain in the 1920's (?). I am the son of a german jewish refugee who came to Britain in 1936. He attended the Hall School, Hampstead. So did I. He went to Westminster school. So did I. He studied French and German for A level. So did I. He went to Magdalen College, Oxford. So did I. He studied French and German. So did I. He became a poet.

Strange meeting

One day in the 1970's I was in a residential street in York during a day trip from Richmond. A party of schoolchildren approached from the opposite direction. I recognised the man in charge as someone who taught with me at Fairfield Boys High School in Sydney during 1964. He was now teaching in East Anglia, and was also on an excursion. We talked briefly.

Pan Am Flight 103

This happened to my sister in law who was booked on an Air India flight out of Heathrow on Wednesday, 21 December 1988 to spend Christmas with her boyfriend in Alabama. The Air India flight was late in due to engine problems at its starting point so she was told she could rebook at no cost with either Pan Am or TWA. When she approached the 2 check-in desks which were near to each other, there was no one currently at the Pan Am desk so she turned instead to the TWA desk and re-booked on their flight. And the rest is history...

Birth Date Coincidence

Carolyn There is a strange connection with the number 23 in our family Both my mother and mother-in-law were born on the 23rd of the month My eldest daughter was born on the 3rd and my middle daughter on the 20th - added together = 23 My youngest was born on the 23rd My birthday is the 7th and my husband the 30th - 30-7 = 23!!

Words and numbers coincidences.

Sometimes I have the TV running in the background when I am reading or doing a crossword, and over the last few years have found increasingly that just as I read a word, phrase or number, it is spoken on the TV. The words or phrases might, at a stretch of the imagination, be attributable to frequency of use, but the numbers are another matter. The types of broadcast could be news, documentaries, sometimes a film, and so forth, so there is no particular type of programme in which it occurs. There are phases when it happens more than at other times, but it is still a source of bemusement. It has also happened while I have been travelling and talking to my husband. In these instances I say something and at the same instant we pass some billboard or sign which is a repeat of a word or phrase or number that I have spoken. I have a BSc and tend to try to attribute a scientific explanation rather than a 'woo-woo' one. I have my qualitative ideas about such things, but all I can say on a quantitative level is that I have observed these things happening.

pipe cutter

helping a friend to re-plumb bathroom. Saturday afternoon. Using his pipe cutter ( a tool no more then 30mm square) I noticed the cutting wheel was damaged and wasn't cutting the copper pipe very well. I promised I'd get a new one for him by Monday (my present to him). Sunday morning my son was playing an away game of football, 35 miles from home. He asked me to go with him. I did. waiting for the game to start he asked me to help him 'warm up' by kicking to ball to-and-fro. We set about doing it but my son insisted on moving where we were, to another part of the park (behind the goal mouth). When my son told me where to stand, I felt something hard under my right shoe. Thinking it was a stone I bent down into the grass, parted the grass and there, the exact same cutter, same colour and brand as my friend's one. scaaaaaarrrrryyyyy

music repeats

I recorded a whole load of solo oboe ident jungles for classic fm over twenty years ago. I tune in every so often at home or in the car,( a two hour journey weekly there and back in that time) but I rarely hear these particular jingles…maybe six to ten times over the last decade. This morning I put classic fm on, and they repeatedly keep playing one of 'my' jingles..six times I have heard it in the past two hours..there must be a hidden message for me to think about here.( Angels work in mysterious ways.)
