understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

About 27 years ago I was working at a software house in London, preparing a bid for a contract with the Navy. The Navy contract officer was based at the Admiralty Research establishment at Portland, near Weymouth. My sister - who I had rather lost touch with and hadn't spoken to for a couple of years was also working at the establishment. Anyway, one day I phoned the establishment and asked for the extension number of the contract officer - the switchboard operator clearly misheard the extension number, because my sister answered the phone (I didn't know her extension number, so no scope for a psychological slip on my part). After some mutual surprise, we chatted and she informed me that she had just found out that she was going to be a mum ... very spooky.
