understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

Small world.

My friend and I was on the way to a snorkelling boat trip in Sharm El Sheik Egypt in a small coach in April 2003 when on the way the coach picked up a couple from another hotel. They caught our eyes immediately as they were quite an attractive couple. The guy was wearing a kikoy (a Kenyan sarong) and a bandana around his head. We said hello to make conversations and to be as welcoming as we could be. We found that they were in thier late twenty, his girlfriend 'Erika' was born to a Kenya mum and an Austrian dad. The guy was call Manzin, he was born to a South African dad and an Austrian mum. They were both from Vienna and decided to travel and settled in Kilburn London where they had been living for a few years after graduating from university. By the end of the trip, we got even chatty and I told them that I was from Laos and I have a brother in law who was with my sister with two little kids.

Lucky ticket!

My two sons - one in the army, one at university - arranged independently to got to a pop festival a couple of hundred miles away, each with their own friends. They both had the tickets sent to my house. The student set off a day early to stay with friends but realised as he arrived that he'd forgotten his ticket! He rang me and I was able to locate the ticket and give it to the soldier in the hope that they'd meet up. No need to worry, as they both turned up at the same gate at the same time before they'd had a chance to arrange anything!

"Chance" train meeting

In October 1981 I travelled from England to Germany I got off the night ferry at the Hook of Holland and boarded a long train for my onward journey to Heidelberg I chose a carriage at random,it had 6 seats and the only other occupant was a female student from Manchester We chatted and had a pleasant journey, sharing lunch in Cologne and boarding the same train for our onward trip, saying our goodbyes at my destination In May 1982 I did the same journey (for the first time since the previous October) I chose a carriage at the Hook of Holland,it was empty......and then in walked the same girl (it was also her first trip back to Germany)

Wedding Name Double

In May 2009, before my husband and I were married, we went to go and look at a venue for our wedding reception (Wilbraham Barns, Great Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire). We turned up for a 3 o'clock appointment and I told the events coordinator Simon that my name was Lucy Harrison and we were due to look around the venue. He looked a little confused and it turned out that another 'Lucy Harrison' was also looking around the venue at the exact same time! We introduced ourselves, it was very strange meeting someone with the same name as me! I did have to check that we weren't going to have the same surname after getting married!

Birthdate & birthday coincidence

I flew to New Orleans for a 5 day Mojo workshop in October (last year). There were 20 people on this workshop, mostly Americans, but also Brits, Italians, Irish and Swiss. When I introduced myself I said I had hit 50 that year. Chatting at coffee the next morning Annie mentioned she had also hit 50 that year. It was the same day as me. When we mentioned it later there was another person in the 20 who had the same day, but was 4 years younger than us. June 14th. 1961 Boy George's birthdate too!!!!!! Diana Years ago 2 of my English cousins (different maternal lines) ran into each other on the Great Barrier Reef (very long and very far away from England!!!!!) neither knew the other was in Australia.

holiday/family

My parents were visiting from Spain where they have lived for the past 6 years. They bumped into an old neighbour, who when chatting discovered they were both on the same cruise over Christmas., On the cruise they were chatting and got onto the subject of boxing. My father said that his granddaughter did boxing, the neighbour said how funny as she'd just given a cheque to a local boxing club for funding from the royal variety club of Great Britain , to a Carl Barton, that is my son in law said my dad!!

Time Traveller's Wife

I borrowed a copy of The Time Traveller's Wife from my local library in December 2006. Between Christmas and New Year I received a post-card to notify me that the book was due back to the library early in January and that another reader had placed a reservation on the book so renewal was not going to be an option. As I was only about half way through the book I had to devote extra time to my reading. I made good progress and at about 6pm on New Year's Eve, I started to read the final chapter of the book. The book ends with the death of the Time Traveller......on 31st December 2006 . As the book was written in the mid 1990's, I thought it was spooky to finish the book on precisely the date the author penned the date for the death of his subject!! - Nigel

Baffled in Brazil

I went on holiday to Recife, Brazil last year having lived there 17 years ago without having been back since. One important reason for going back was to finally sort out some slightly mucky elements from my past which had contributed to my leaving - I had been spurred into action by having read a book called The Velvet Rage last year. I wanted to meet up with 2 Brazilians, Savio and Walter, both of whom I had been in a relationship with, but had lost touch with when I left the country (and was unable to track down on any social networking sites). I thought i would go anyway and somehow try and locate them - totally unrealistic really in a city of a million people. The 2 of them used to share a flat with a 3rd person Adelmo, who had moved to Switzerland 15 years ago, at which point (so it turned out) all 3 of them had lost touch. Walking along the beach on my 2nd day in Recife I bumped into Adelmo - he was also just visting on holiday, from Switzerland, as his mother had died the previous month. I was naturally delighted because I assumed he would know of the whereabouts of the other 2.

Communication coincidence

I was working in Locarno, Switzerland as a disc jockey and my girlfriend who made unique exotic leather handbags, lived in Neuchatel, also in Switzerland. Neuchatel is a three and a half hour drive – some three hundred kilometers away from Locarno on a very indirect route. I was missing my girlfriend and was hoping to see her over the weekend but there was a problem with the telephones and I was unable to confirm her coming. On Friday night I was working in the discotheque unaware of my girlfriend’s movements when a young girl came in and sat next to me in the discotheque control booth. On her table she placed a uniquely exotic handbag that only my girlfriend could have made. “Where did you get this?” I asked her. So she told me that a couple of days previous she had been in Neuchatel and had seen this girl making handbags.
