understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My friend and I was on the way to a snorkelling boat trip in Sharm El Sheik Egypt in a small coach in April 2003 when on the way the coach picked up a couple from another hotel. They caught our eyes immediately as they were quite an attractive couple. The guy was wearing a kikoy (a Kenyan sarong) and a bandana around his head. We said hello to make conversations and to be as welcoming as we could be. We found that they were in thier late twenty, his girlfriend 'Erika' was born to a Kenya mum and an Austrian dad. The guy was call Manzin, he was born to a South African dad and an Austrian mum. They were both from Vienna and decided to travel and settled in Kilburn London where they had been living for a few years after graduating from university. By the end of the trip, we got even chatty and I told them that I was from Laos and I have a brother in law who was with my sister with two little kids. Erika then told me a funny story about this one time that they went to a Japanese restaurant in Kilburn and when it closed at the end of the night, the young chef came out and paid her very nice compliment, saying how pretty she was and what a lucky guy Manzin was to have such a pretty girlfriend such as her. The chef then got merry and went on to tell Erika and Mazin that he was from Laos, had two little children. Immediatley I asked Erika if she remembered his name, which she replied 'Steve'. I almost fell of the bar when I said laughly, that's my brother in law. What a small world and we have been friends ever since.
