understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Birthdates Coincedence x 3

Hello. I'm one of three brothers, (all different ages about 3 years apart), and we all have children. Three of the cousins share the same birthday of July 14th but are all different ages - again about 3 years apart. The middle one is a boy and the other 2 are girls. We've often tried to reacall what special event may have occured about 9 months before July 14th and can only come up with Guy Fawkes Night :-)

unlikely meeting

I went to visit an old school friend who had recently moved into a flat in a house in Muswell Hill, London. I rang his flat bell, and he buzzed me in to enter the hallway. To my surprise in the hall I saw another old friend - a fellow musician I had played with several years previously and had not seen for several years.

It turned out that he was coincidentally visiting the person who lived in the flat next door to the friend I was visiting!

The two people who lived in the flats had no other connection other than being neighbours. I did not know my musician friend's friend, and my school friend did not know my musician friend, so there was no possibility of the meeting being other than sheer chance.

It is still incredible to me that out of all the flats in London, two people who knew each other could meet, having independently planned to visit separate acquaintances, completely unbeknownst to each other, arriving at adjacent rooms at exactly the same time. (An additional coincidence - though admittedly not quite as staggering is that both of my friends were named Dave)

Dying message

Two of my sisters, who no longer had contact with my father, had exactly the same dream, on the same night. One was on holiday in Portugal and the other was in Liverpool. In the dream my father had said how sorry he was for everything he had done and asked for them to forgive him. Each of my sisters had independently told me about the strange dream they had, the dream they relayed to me was identical in every detail. We then worked out dates, which was easy for me to remember as they'd both had the dream the night before my father died. I don't know whether I believe in co-incidences or may be it's that people can telepathically contact someone close to them when the desire and need is so strong.

HOME SWEET HOME

I was serving a customer in my shop and she looked so familiar I was sure I knew her from years before. She wasn't from the area and after discussing where we'd each lived and when, there was no likelihood of us ever having met. Before establishing this I had told her the area I'd lived in as a child, she told me that her mother and stepfather had just moved to that part of Liverpool. I then went on to tell her the exact address I had lived at, she replied "Yes that's right" which I thought was a very strange response.( In fact she was saying "that's right "as her mother and stepfather were now living in the house I lived in as a child. So although it's highly unlikely that I'd ever met her before we did have a connection.

Cookergate

My sister had moved house 4 months earlier, There was a new cooker in this house, but not as good as her old cooker, which she had temporarily left in her old house. She offered to give the cooker she had in her new house to Tracey, the buyer of her old house. For some reason there was a delay in swapping them over. I had visited my sister many times in her new house but for some reason on this occasion I realised that her cooker (to be given to Tracy) looked brand new and asked would it be possible for Tracey to have my cooker and I'd have the new one. This was not a problem. I confirmed that Tracey had not seen the cooker. I asked how she could explain to Tracey that the cooker that was in her house would not be the one she was having. My sister reassured me that Tracey phones her if post arrives and there was no reason for Tracey to visit her house. However, I insisted we think of an explanation, which we did. My sister was sitting facing her front window, 15 minutes later her mouth opened and she looked shocked, yes Tracey was walking down the path.

Long lost friend and chance encounters

I was living in Bristol, visited my family in Liverpool, birthday event, went to a night club I only visited that once. Met a colleague I'd worked with in Ipswich 6 years earlier. She never went to nightclubs but this exception was for a special works event. A few days later I visited her home, on the bus on the way there I asked a passenger if she knew the road and when I should get off. She said her closest friend used to live in that road. She went on to tell me how special that friend was and that she spent the last 6 months of her life in a nursing home. It transpired that she lived at No 7, the house my friend now lived in. I arrived at my friend's house, before she even let me through the door she told me she was desperately anxiou. She couldn't sleep and felt afraid in the house because she knew that the woman who lived there had died and she couldn't rest because she didn't know whether the woman died in the house and didn't like to ask any neighbours. I was able to tell her that she died in the nursing home and that she had been a lovely lady. Her whole demeanor changed, it was as if the weight of the world had been lifted from her.

incredible musical coincidence

Just watched the 'tails you win....' t.v programme (very interesting) and it prompted me to share this with you: A few years ago I had music playing quietly on my hi-fi and my girlfriend was behind me on the sofa on her laptop. I realised she was humming along to the music perfectly in tune and time. This continued for about 16 bars (i'm a musician) until i turned round to tell her (jokingly!) to shut up as i was trying to record a mix and i thought she was doing it to put me off. I was very, very surprised to see she was listening to her own music on headphones on her laptop! We have very different tastes of music. As I said, she was perfectly in tune and perfectly in time and it was quite a complex melody. If this had happened only for 1 or 2 bars it would have been odd but for 16 BARS!? It was the highlight of my day. Hope you find this interesting Carl jordan

Three Grand-Children born in the same month of the same year

I am one of five children, and my brother, sister and myself all had daughters born in the month of January 1986. My older sister was born on the 13th January and her daughter was born on the 5th January 1986 both Capricorn's. My older brother (born in September) daughter was born on the 18th January 1986, and I was born on the 6th February and my daughter was born on the 28th January both Antiquarian's. Neither one of us knew we were going to have children born in the same month of the same year.

50% left handed

My gran had five kids. The first had three boys, the second had two boys, the third had two girls, the fourth had two girls and the fifth had one girl and one boy. Each of her five children had one left handed child, and one right handed. Unfortunately I don't know about the very first grandchild.
