understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I was serving a customer in my shop and she looked so familiar I was sure I knew her from years before. She wasn't from the area and after discussing where we'd each lived and when, there was no likelihood of us ever having met. Before establishing this I had told her the area I'd lived in as a child, she told me that her mother and stepfather had just moved to that part of Liverpool. I then went on to tell her the exact address I had lived at, she replied "Yes that's right" which I thought was a very strange response.( In fact she was saying "that's right "as her mother and stepfather were now living in the house I lived in as a child. So although it's highly unlikely that I'd ever met her before we did have a connection.
