Cambridge Coincidences Collection

Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

Why? By recording your coincidence stories here, you can help him build a picture of what kinds of coincidences are out there and which ones seem to ‘get to’ us the most. Your coincidence stories can also help him explore the scientific explanations which may account for them – whether by doing the maths to calculate the chances of a coincidence, or speculating on the weird and wonderful workings of our brains.

Coincidences tend to be ‘surprising matches’ – sometimes they are lucky, sometimes unlucky, sometimes just mind-boggling. To help you recall the coincidences that have happened in your life, here’s a list of some common types of coincidence:

  • Surprising repetitions: for instance when you’ve had not contact with someone for ages, then find two connections to them very close together in time. Or when over several years multiple members of the same family are born with the same birthday. Or even a repetition of a really rare event – like winning the lottery twice, or your life being saved twice by the same person!
  • Simultaneous events: for example when two people phone each other at exactly the same time.
  • Parallel lives: such as when two people in a small group find they share a birthday or an unusual name, or when two people discover their lives match each other in bizarre details.
  • Uncanny patterns: imagine picking letters in Scrabble that spell your name.
  • Unlikely chains of events: perhaps you lost your false teeth overboard and found them inside a fish you caught twenty years later?

If anything coincidental has happened to you - anything that made you stop and say "well, what were the chances of that..?" - then please record your story in the form below! Please try to keep your story personal - about you or someone you know. The only thing we'd ask you to steer clear of are premonitions or déjà vu, purely because - whilst fascinating - they're quite common and also difficult to analyse.

You could also tell us about coincidences in the news, but please provide a link to a reliable source!

Two Lives Intertwined

My husband & my life intertwined for 38 years before we met... coincidence... We grew up in the same community. We did not attend the same schools but we knew many of the same kids. In high school we had mutual friends and attended the same social events. My best friend dated his work partner for a year after high school. In our twenties we both moved to another city and lived three blocks away from each other. We knew the same people and attended many of the same social events. In our thirties we both moved back to our home town.

Twice in two weeks

In 1977 I went to Blackpool uk on a coach trip, I missed the coach back and didn't have enough money for a room, so I found a bus shelter and slept in that. During the night I woke up as i heard someone moving near me. It was another guy who was asleep on the next bench to me, he awoke as I moved and I realised I knew him from my home town 70 miles away, he went to the same school as me in Halifax uk. Turned out that he had missed his last train home to Halifax uk I hadn't seen him for about 3 years since I left school, we talked a bit and next morning, we went home on the t

Lizard

Last Tuesday I went on vacation with a couple of my friends. When we were about to head to bed I noticed the curtain wasn’t closed, so I went to close it and a lizard falls on me it really scared me. The next Tuesday which is today I’m back home and I decide to open my curtain guess what happens??? A lizard appears but this time doesn’t fall on me. Both were dead, both happened on a Tuesday, and both happened when I was either opening or closing the curtain.

an old family name

I was on a train in Russia and the train conductor called me by my grandmother’s original maiden name (“O—-“ a Russian last name which her father had changed to “K—-“ upon immigrating to Greece to better assimilate). It is not a common last name (though it is a famous one, as it belongs to a noble family) and bears no resemblance to my actual last name — “S—-.”

Cat's Mum

My fiancé's, bestie, Catriona, held a bridal shower for her at her flat in Victoria, BC, Canada. I was to come pick up my fiancé after work. I got held up so everyone had left already when I got there. Cat's Mum arrived early to visit with Cat and have a cup of tea. She arrived when we were just getting things together to leave so we were all jammed in the front entry of Cat's flat. Well we are not savages so we did proper introductions. I introduced myself and used my last name "L" in my introduction. Cat's Mum said "L" heh?
