Cambridge Coincidences Collection

Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

Family

I lived in London, my sister lived in Chelmsford. I had not seen her for a number of years. I was on my way to run a IT course for early one morning and walked past this woman, who, stopped and said, "don't say hello to your sister". I barely recognised her, we had not seen each other for so long. We stopped and chatted. She was in London sitting an examination.

death on the same day on different years

My boyfriend s mother died last week on the day after her birthday. Her mother also died no the day after her birthday.

Hospital Delivery Unit

My University had made an admin error with my booking for living in halls of residence in my first year. When I got there on my first day it was clear that they'd screwed up with 40-50 other new students. For the first week therefore the Uni had to put us up in a sports hall on fold up beds- think emergency shelter following natural disaster. Anyway the lad on the foldable next to me was from Bangor, Ireland and I was from London. We got chatting and realised that his family an my family had lived in Kenya during the 60s.

Lots of shared birthdays

I have an only child, a daughter;
My birthday 27th January, my son-in-law's mother's birthday 27th January
My daughter's birthday 30th April her father-in-law's birthday 30th April
I have two grandsons;
My grandson Thomas' birthday 22nd February, his great grandmother's birthday 22nd February
My grandson Matthew's birthday 23rd November, his great Uncle's birthday 23nd November
Plus my husband and our friend Bob share the same birthday 17th March
Birthday coincidence

I was born on the 20th July 1979 (which, I have heard, was 10 years to the day after the first moon landing). My half-sister (same Dad, different mums) died of cancer on the 20th July 1988, and then my half-brother had his first daughter on the 20th July 1993.

Mother and wife birthday

My wife and my mother were both born on August 13th, albeit in different years. I tend not to forget to got either of them a present.

Scarborough

I trained as a nurse in SCARBOROUGH, North Yorkshire. While I was there my half sister who I did not know existed at that time went there on her honeymoon. Later in life I "discovered" her existance and traced her to SCARBOROUGH in Ontario, Canada. Much later I met my husband in Tobago and we got married in SCARBOROUGH, Tobago.

Hire Car Escapade

On 26 December 2011 we flew from London to Montreal with some friends. The friends had arranged to hire a large 4 wheel drive vehicle. Due to the busy holiday period the car rental company had very few cars available and nothing in the class of car booked. They were given a smaller vehicle, but couldn't fit all their luggage in it. So, they rejected it and waited whilst the hire company found another vehicle that was larger. We then all travelled approximately 120km north to our accommodation near Mont Tremblant, Quebec.

666, the number of the beast.

About 15 years ago, I was working in a lab, analysing water & waste water. Another lab tech & I were talking about music and his love of Led Zeppelin. We then moved on to the fact that Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page had owned a house in Scotland that once belonged to the famous devil worshiper Aleister Crowley. At the same time, we were doing pH analysis and at that point the pH meter completed it's analysis and the meter read 6.66!

Birthday coincidence

My mother-in-law has two children who share the same birth date but four years apart (20th November) and a neice, a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren who share the same birth date (22nd February). In fact, two of the great-grandchildren are siblings born two years apart and the other great-grandchild was actually born on the exact same day as one of the siblings!
