Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

Family coincidences

My parents were both the same age. High school sweethearts. Both had rheumatic fever when they were children. Both parents had heart valve replacement surgeries. Both parents went blind in their right eye. (Moms was from a blood clot, dads was from an explosion) both parents had the same auto immune disorder, both parents had a parent that was a twin, my mothers grandmother was born on December 6... and two of my parents grandchildren were born on that same day. My father was born on December 5th. His mother died the same day that her father died, many years later. My mother’s paternal grandmother And my mothers maternal grandmother died on the same day, same year. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. And my mother and I were born on the same day.

Glowing Lights

I was doing so online browsing - "window shopping" - when I came across car accessories. These accessories were LED lights that you can put on the valve stem (where you air up the tires). When the tires spin the LED lights flow. This was the first time in my life I heard of these little lights that can go on your tire. So naturally I told my dad and friends that I thought they were super cool and I wanted them. The very next day my brother, dad, and I were driving home on the expressway when a car passes us with those lights on the tires. I couldn't believe. From not knowing about the lights, to discovering them on the internet, telling my family about them, and then seeing them the very next day. Crazy. I never saw them on any other car in my life and I see them the very next day I first learn about them.

highschool crush

1979 Edmonton. Crush fierce on Lori. She invited me to a house party so of course I am going. I rang the front door bell and introduced myself to Lori's parents and younger sister who was keen to know what was going on. Then went downstairs to the party. At the party Lori made it clear to all that she and Darren were going out. Damn! I moved to Calgary the next year. 6 years later I move to the west coast for Uni. I am there for 4 years and am working a summer job at a shitty mall restaurant before my final year. A family comes in, I knew I knew them but couldn't figure out where I knew them from. After they paid they were getting up to leave and I had to know how I knew them. "I'm sorry, but I'm sure I know you people...." Younger daughter yells "See? I told you that was him!" brief catch up, Lori was moving into town to go to Uni. "Well maybe we'll see each other around campus." When I got home there was a message from my fiancé saying she was over at her best friend's place getting the flat ready for the new roommate to move in, come on over and help. My fiance's besties' new roomy? Yup Lori.

Chance encounters

Recently I met up with a guy from a dating app. We've crossed paths, online, over the last few years. I don't remember exactly when, but at least 5 years ago must've been the first time. I don't think we spoke, or if we did it was brief. We were working in the same area, but never crossed paths. I was on a casual contractor basis, and on one day I was asked to work at a site, which happened to be the one day that week that he visited that site. I remember recognising him. While the chances of that happening were small, it was still in the realm of possibility. Over the last few years, we've interacted online (not dating sites) without realising it; we've lived in the same areas and never crossed paths.... We now live and work in completely different areas. We have no mutual friendships... but, randomly, this week he is away with two friends who have distinctive names. Last night I filled in for a basketball team that my brother plays with. One of the team members said that next week two other players would be back. It was the friends' names. That in itself is a coincidence. If it is the same people then I don't know what to say.

More dates

A good friend of mine while growing up, was the next door neighbor in high school. After getting married, my husband and I purchased property and the older sister of that friend was now my neighbor at my new property. Thought it was kinda funny. What’s really strange is that on my grandmas birthday, she gave birth to her son. On my nephews birthday, she gave birth to a daughter. And on my younger brothers birthday, her third child was born. And then I found out a bit later that the youngest sister of my high school friend had a daughter who was born on my birthday. Which is also my mothers birthday.

Bizarre

I am the only girl, in the middle of brothers. Our father died, we were trying to prepare for his funeral- I was putting myself under a lot of pressure to get everything completed by the funeral day. My brothers aren’t inclined to even know what to do in this type of situation so basically, everything was on me. I was rushing around for nearly a full week, getting things printed, picture boardS, cooking and baking, renting the building and setting up tables and chairs and preparing everything there etc. along with grieving for my father. I was exhausted and broken hearted, feeling somewhat defeated and alone. The day before the funeral, I stopped at my dads house and my younger brother was there opening mail. As I pulled up to the house my brother had opened a cable bill of my fathers, and a small brochure fluttered to the ground. He said he saw me getting out of my vehicle as he was bending down to pick up the brochure, when he noticed that my name was on the brochure.

Dated

I have many of the same dates, In my family, of births and deaths that are oddily coinciding with other family members. I was born on my mothers birthday. My mothers mother recieved a phone call in the morning on May 27, 1989 telling her that her mother had died. Several hours later on that same day, my mother’s father received a phone call that his own mother had died as well. So both of my moms grandmas died on the same day, just hours a part in different states. My dads mother and her father died on the same day but she died many years after her father. My moms father died on feb 6. So did my dog. My mom died on feb 22nd, so did my other dog. My father died July 19th- my nephews grandmother, on his moms side, died that day as well. My moms grandmas birthday was dec6, so is my sons birthday and my brothers daughters birthday, as well.

Two Lives Intertwined

My husband & my life intertwined for 38 years before we met... coincidence... We grew up in the same community. We did not attend the same schools but we knew many of the same kids. In high school we had mutual friends and attended the same social events. My best friend dated his work partner for a year after high school. In our twenties we both moved to another city and lived three blocks away from each other. We knew the same people and attended many of the same social events. In our thirties we both moved back to our home town. I lived in his mom’s neighbourhood for a couple of years and we became friends. In our late thirties, early forties we lived in the same area. Our kids attended the same schools and I worked with his ex-wife. My daughter’s best friend is his niece. In our mid forties we worked for the same company. We finally met a year later and got married. My husband died this past summer but the coincidences continued during our marriage and after his death. We separated in 2019. He died suddenly a year later on the exact date we had separated. A week before he died he reminded me of what his final wishes were.
