understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My father was dining with friends when the telephone rang. His hostess answered the phone, and returned to the table to tell my father 'Stef, it's for you.' He exchused himself from the table, and spoke to the friend who had called, asking 'How did you know I was here?' The friend replied 'What do you mean, I dialed your home number.' The call was somehow misconnected and the 'wrong number' was that of the people with whom he was dining. My father's telephone number and that of his hosts bore no resemblance to each other.
