understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
A few years ago we travelled to South Africa for the summer, working with some churches in Durban. For part of the trip we were hosted by families from one of the churches. We stayed in the home of a lovely retired couple who were researching their family tree. While they were showing me some of the paperwork I realised their family name was the same as my grandmother's maiden name. They were able to show me where she was on their family tree - distant cousins. We travelled half way round the world to stay with family we didn't know we had!
