understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Just the other day I emailed a friend to say Hi and then found out she had sent me a text 10 minutes earlier. I also frequently notice the time at 11:11, but the main reason for contributing to this log of coincidences is as follows. When my mother was terminally ill with cancer she would sit looking out at the flowers and birds in the garden. Ever since our dog had passed on the year before, next doors three cats also used to lurk in the bushes at the bottom of the garden looking at the birds. I remember my Mum telling me that she longed to be well so that she could play out there again, making it bright and cheerful, and she hoped the cats would come up to the patio and maybe indoors. We live in Hertfordshire but Mum was admitted to University College hospital in Westminster for an operation a week before she passed on. In the room she was in was one other bed and that woman was from the same town in Hertfordshire as us and my sister had gone to school with her daughter. After the awful even of my Mothers passing, we met the Patient Affairs Officer at the hospital. We found out that he used to live in the next road from us and his Mother had been my head teacher at primary school. Unsure of which Funeral Directors to use, we randomly chose one from a few leaflets given to us by the Church. This happened to be in Camden. My parents had met in Camden. Once at the Funeral Directors, we discovered that he and my Father had worked together in North London as Police Constables 40 years ago. Back at the house on the evening after my Mother passed on, we sat looking out at the garden. Outside the tabby cat came up and looked right in through the window. The next day we were sitting in the living room with the patio doors open and the black cat came into the house, and the day after that the stripy cat came in. Mum never lived to see the cats come into the house, and after those first few days they never came in again. We feel that all of these coincidences are signs and when other things sometimes happen, such as hearing the piece of classical music we played at her funeral on special days like new years day, we feel they are signs from her that her energy is still with us.
