understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I am originally from Maidstone England, my parents, my sister and I moved to Australia in 1988. We have had many trips back to the UK and we have stayed with my Grandparents in Maidstone each time we visit. Back in grade 6 which was 15 years ago (I was 10- I am now 25 years old) we went back to the UK for 6 weeks. My sister and I got very friendly with the local kids in the court, in particular siblings names Jack, Hollie & Chloe who were 8, 5 and 3 at the time. We would play together eachday. Jack, Hollie and Chloe's family moved to London soon after we returned to Australia and we never saw them again. Christmas Day in 2011 brought me a very big surprise indeed! We were celebrating Christmas night at Darren's house, he is my husbands cousin's boyfriend (I know thats a mouth full!) my whole family was there along with 40 other people. Darren's family are from London, they moved to Australia 6 years ago. This is where I was introduced to another English family who recently moved to Australia one year ago. I was introduced to them all seperately and then told they were siblings. Their names rang a bell but I didn't think anything of it until 2 days later when I was gardening! Chloe's face has not changed since she was 3 years old. I rang my partners cousin and asked her to ask Hollie if they had once lived at Matfield Cresent in England. Sure enough Hollie said YES! She had recognised me from somewhere but wasn't sure where... 15 years later and half way around the world we were reunited again.. the likes of coming together at my husbands family members house was uncanny! It turns out Jack, Hollie and Chloe had moved into the same street as Darren's family back in London, they used to play with Darren and his siblings! That is how they knew eachother and kept in touch. Fate? I don't know, call it what you like but It looks like we will be seeing alot more of eachother in the years to come! Perhaps they were brought back into our lives for a reason?!
