understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I was on business recently in Hong Kong and was using Google Latitude on my phone to share my location. Shortly after arriving at the hotel room I received an email from my friend asking me how my trip to Mumbai was. When I checked Google Latitude, sure enough I was located in Mumbai. What made it a surprising coincidence was that my location was being reported as within 1km of my company office in north west Mumbai, even though I had never visited Mumbai and I was in a hotel room in Hong Kong. This anomaly only occured from the Hong Kong hotel room and no other location in Hong Kong
