understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
When I started my undergraduate the whole of the 1st biology intake took part in a lab exercise. We were divided into groups of four seemingly at random and upon discussion I found that all four members of the group (including myself) lived currently in the same small village in Buckinghamshire but we had never consciously met before - indeed two of them had only recently moved there. No other group we asked had any geographical affiliations so this was either co-incidence or a we were grouped together by someone at the department who knew our addresses, though one of group had just moved from Italy and was pretty sure they didn't know his new address.
I have never met anyone else - despite it being a common question to come up: where are you from? - who has even heard of my village.
