understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My husband,me and my son and his friend where travelling through France down to Spain. My brother in law and his wife where also driving through France to their house in Provence. We left the day before them and we had also stopped overnight in Dijon. As we where going along we all wondered where they where on the Autoroute, low and behold just in front of us was a red Audi, my husband said it would be funny if it was them, we got along side and it was them. We all pulled into a rest area to remark on the coincidence. In 2010 we where on hoiday in Cornwall, and we have friends in Falmouth so wanted to visit them, but I knew they had moved house but they had not forwarded their new address. We decided to go to Falmouth anyway, as we drove into Falmouth we saw a silver 4x4 in front of us again we said that looks like the car they had when we last saw them 4 years earlier. The car pulled over at a day nursery, and we pulled up and yes it was Maria picking up her grandson from nursery, so we followed her to the new house. In June 1992 my son was killed in a car accident, he was on his way home, it was the worst day of my life and I could not get out of my head that he died alone in his car. A couple of days later our black and white cat went missing, we found him in a poorly way, and my husband and I took him to our vets. I took our cat in to see the vet (he had an infection, my son was very into animals and I think he knew we would still take him to the vets even though we where dealing with his death) When I came out to the vets my husband was standing with his arms around a young woman, very upset. It turned out she was in the car following my son's car when the accident happened and she had actually sat with my son holding his hand and talking to him until the ambulance arrived. My relieve that he was not alone when he died helped us.
