understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My grandfather, a Sergeant, was killed April 13, 1945 in Germany. Their platoon was ambushed by the Germans while on a scouting mission. He and his Captain took cover in a ditch and returned fire while most of the other troops were able to escape. One other soldier was killed and some were taken prisoner. My Grandfather and his Captain stood up and sprayed machine gun fire to cover the platoon, knowing they had no chance of escape. They were found the next day dead, embracing eachother.<br /> My brother dated a girl in High School in 1987 in New York who was from the Philippines. She later moved to Des Moines, Iowa, and my brother once went to visit her there. The survivors and family members of my Granfathers unit later formed a group that meets annually. We had gotten in contact with the son of the Captain who also lived in Des Moines, and my brother mentioned that he had visited an old friend, "Mia" there. The Captain's son told him that his son dated a "Mia" and it was the same girl. Two men who were friends and died in battle together in WWII, from different parts of the country, their grandchildren also from different states would eventually date the same woman over 40 years later.
