understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

1. In 1995, my wife and I were on our 25th wedding anniversary holiday in America. We had arranged to fly to Hawaii at the end of the holiday but made a snap decision to change our flight by a couple of days. Whilst boarding the aircraft we both saw another passenger looking at us from across the aisle. He got up, came over and said "We know each other don`t we?" Although he did look familiar it was only when he reminded us that we had attended the same Gym in our home town several years previously that the penny dropped. He had left to work in Maui and had also changed his flight so what were the odds of the meeting taking place. 2. Later in Hawaii (Oahu) we booked to see a show and on arrival we were allocated seats at a table at which an American family were sitting. We all introduced ourselves and the Father told us that they used to live in the UK at a place called High Wycombe, our home town and that his daughter had attended a high school in the city. The school was where our own daughter had gone and it transpired that they were there at the same time. 3. Before we married and had just become engaged, I was football training one evening and during a five a side kick about outside, put my new ring in my track suit which was on the floor. At the end of the session I picked up my track suit totally forgetting about the ring. Later, whilst showering, I realised that the ring was missing and having searched my track suit I concluded that the ring must be where I had put it, in the grass. All the team dressed and came to help and someone asked me where I thought I was when I put it down. I said I thought I was close and got down on hands and knees to look. My hand immediately felt something and I picked it up, it was a ring, I couldn`t see it properly because it was dark but when I looked again in the changing room it was definitely my ring. The footnote to this is that we`ve just celebrated 41 years of marriage. Malcolm
