understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I was going to London from Birmingham for my birthday. There was a fire at Milton Keynes, so instead of taking the first class express straight through we had to go via the Cotswolds and hope for a seat. I sat facing backwards. One table down facing me was a man I'd never met before but who I was able to see throughout the journey. The following day, after a trip to the Tower Of London, we met with friends in Covent Garden for a pub lunch. We went to a random pub that we walked past and liked the look of - and sat in the corner of the pub was the man who I spent the train trip looking at the previous day.

I am an ex-wren (Women's Royal Naval Service). After the advent of friends re-united I contacted another Wren who I did my trade training with. She had served at Portalnd Naval Air Station with another friend, whilst I went to Culdrose Naval Air Station. After our leading rates qualifying course we went to our next draft and lost contact. I asked the wren who I contacted about the other friend and she said she'd been in contact with her. I then received an email to say that someone had found me on Friends Reunited, but I didn't recognise the name. I contacted the person and asked who they were and what they were doing now, only to find that in the interim years we'd both left the service, married and were now living less than 1 mile away from each other in - DUBAI!! Needless to say, we met up several times during my friends remaining time in Dubai.
