understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In 2005, age 13, I went on a package holiday with my mum to Turkey. Whilst there I met a large group of people my age including one boy called David. After the holiday I kept in contact with some people I met out there although I rarely spoke to David. My mum and I enjoyed the holiday so much we decided to return the following year. Unbeknown to us so did David and his family. 'What a coincidence' we thought. Even more of a coincidence that the year after that both our families returned to the same resort at the same time again without each other knowing. I fell out of contact with David and thought nothing more of it. Until in 2010 I went to Greece for a holiday to a new resort with a new company with my dad and heard someone call my name whilst by the pool. It was David! As he'd never met my dad or brother who i was with and hadn't seen me for 3 years, plus being in a different country and at a different resort with a different holiday company I thought it was amazing that we happened to be on the same holiday as each other again. But there was more... It happened that Davi and his family were on holiday with another family too. This family happened to be from Swansea in Wales, where my dads family is from. Which is coincidental enough, but it turned out that the daughter in the family who is the same age as me, is friends with my cousin (my dad's brother's son). We became very close friends and we agreed that we would meet up with each other later on in the summer. I organised to go to hers for a weekend in August. When i told my mum that i was going to Swansea for the weekend she told me that she was going to Swansea that same weekend to visit my sister's boyfriend's family. It wasn't until we arrived that we discovered my friend Alice lived about 300 ft from my sister's boyfriends family where my mum was staying! Such a small world. But there was more! Alice and I decided to go for a night out in swansea and with a few of her friends we had a few drinks at her house before heading out. When one of her friends who was giving us a lift to the town centre arrived, he asked if we'd mind going to another of his friends for some more pre-drinks.....his friend turned out to be my cousin! By this time I thought there had been far too many coincidences and was enjoying how many links and connections had been made. In September of that year i started university at Reading studying Philosophy with extra modules in Classics and Politics. I knew a couple of people from my hometown who had also gone to Reading but hadn't seen them around much. I knew that one of them was living in Mackinder hall and one in Stenton hall on the uni campus but hadn't been to their flats or met any of their flatmates yet. For one of my classics modules we were put into groups of 3 for a presentation. I was with Jack and Will. We decided to meet in Will's flat in Stenton to work on the project. When i got to his flat I told him i only knew of one other person in Stenton but thought it was unlikely that Will would know them considering there are over 900 people in the Hall. It turned out he lived in the same flat in the room opposite Will! Very random, however, I was furthur surprised when i walked into Will's room to find a picture of him with David from my holidays on his wall. David and Will turned out to be best friends from back home! The world seemed so small that i'd made this many links. But when i found out that my other friend from home who was in Mackinder Hall lived in a flat with a girl named Brooke who'd been to school with my friend Alice who I met on holiday with david and also knew my cousin!! TOO MANY LINKS!!
