understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
We had arrived in Melbourne on a trip of a lifetime after a delayed flight from Fiji via Sydney and had to immediately rush to dress for dinner as we were being taken out by my friends' children who had moved there. So next day, 20/12/11, we were absolutely exhausted, but had hired a car to drive to Phillip Island, south of Melbourne to see the wild penguins, a 'must' on our itinerary. We were so tired it took us a long time to get up and get ready after a bit of a lie in, and had put the television on (something we rarely did on holiday) to help us wake up. We had no idea which of the hundreds of channels we were on, but were very surprised to hear that the next programme was to be 'Penguin Island' narrated by Rolf Harris, a BBC special on the life of the penguins on Phillip Island. If we had not been so tired we would have missed it, or turned on the TV at the very time and channel it was on. Of course we watched it and found it was on sale at the Penguin site outlet. I had been meaning to send this in to you and being Sunday had some time, you can understand how surprised I was when my husband just shouted up to me "Guess whats on BBC1 at 3.30pm today!" (29/01/12) Yes, its Penguin Island! We also visited the Great Barrier Reef at the beginning of January, and our friends who were looking after our house left a message for us on our return to say they had taped a programme on BBC - The Great Barrier Reef. Not so much of a coincidence, but unusual never the less.
