understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My husband phoned his sister during the recent holiday. The phone line produced a series of unusual clicks as he rang. His sister was ringing him and connected at exactly the same time.

As a teen, I once picked up the phone to call my best friend, only to discover that I had *answered* the phone on her call to me before it had even rung. This produced a couple of minutes of confusion before we realized what had happened.
