understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

One of my many coincidences is, when I was at 6th form college (1990), studying Psychology A level. My friend Simon and I had to do an experiment/project together. We were both into films, music art etc so as mates,. we teamed up.There was one evening that I needed to discuss something to do with our experiment so I called him up. After several minutes of chat on the phone about various things, the conversation got onto our project. We were trying to see the effect caffine had on concentration. At this piont, Simon said ,'why are you talking about Caffine, our experiment is on'.....I can't remember exactly what his was on to be truthful. It turns out that I'd miss dialied my friend Simon's number and got through to another Simon at another 6th form collage doing another Psychology experiment with another student called Tom.Due to our age and similar outlook on life, for the first few minutes we both thought we were talking to the real Tom and simon,it was only the subject matter of the experiment that gave it away.<br /> Another quick one is on behalf of my Brother. Early 1990's. my brother and a couple of his friends were at Brighton station, one of the public telephones begins to ring. After a lot of standing around and debating wether to answer it,one of my brothers friends answers it. the person on the other end asked to speak to Stefano. obviously,it's brighton station and the caller has dialled the wrong number. It turns out that the chap who answered the phone is called Mikele and he has a brother called Stefano. Mikele asked the caller if he wanted to speak with a Stefano .......(I can't remember his surname),the caller said yes.Mikele said, oh that's my brother you want, you've miss dialled the number and got through to Brighton station,he then gave him the correct number.Turns out that the payphone in the station has a very similar number to Mikele's family home number.what are the chances of miss dialing a number, getting through to a public payphone and the person who answers it is the brother of the person you want to speak to.that is weird.
