understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

When I was a teenager in South Africa in the late '70s, I was travelling to England on holiday with my sister. We were waiting for our flight at Jan Smuts airport in Johannesburg when I decided to phone my best friend in a suburb of jo'burg called Bryanston. Whilst I was chatting to her from the telephone booth, I noticed that the man in the booth next door was struggling to use his phone so I asked my friend to hold on a minute whilst I helped this man(who I did not know!). I asked if I could help him and he was very pleased and said that he was from England and had just arrived in SA and was trying to call a colleague. I said 'ok, which town does he live in? He said 'Johannesburg' do I told him what numbers to dial and asked 'which part of Johannesburg?'. He said 'Sandton'. I said 'oh, I'm on the phone go someone in sandton' and told him what to dial. Then I said 'what part of Sandton?'. He said 'Bryanston' and I replied 'OH, I'm on the phone to someone in Bryanston. Who are you trying to call? He said 'Julian L'. I said ' you won't believe this, but I'm on the phone to his daughter!! Come and use my phone and I'll ask my friend to get her dad!'. I went back into my booth and said to my friend ' the man I was helping wants to speak to you dad, can you get him please!'. I've offer thought about this coincidence and woUndered what made me ask a total stranger of I could help whist I was chatting on the phone. I've also wondered what the chances are of 2 people wanting to call the same family from next door phone booths but mostly I've often wondered if the man himself ever thought about what a coincidence that was and how lucky he was to be helped in that way! My name is Janey.
