Student House

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My husband was staying overnight with a friend's parents in Suffolk as he was working in the area and needed a bed for the night. He had known the friend for around 10 years and met her parents a few times. At breakfast time, the friend's mum, who is very chatty, was out. My husband was forced to make conversation with her far more taciturn husband. During the stilted smalltalk it emerged that the student house my husband had lived in 20 years before (in Chichester) had previously been the family home of his host. Not only that, but they had used the same bedroom.
