As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.
understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
In 1995, after over 40 years as being one of the UK's leading top florists, (I was Interflora Florist of the Year in 1981 and taught advanced florsitry with Interflora for over 15 years) I looked for a career change and found it in the wonderful world of herbs where through prayer I had thanked God for the wonderful life he had given me, and asked Him if I could put something good back into society, and the first door opened showing me herbs that had been traditionally used by the Obijwa Native North Americans as a cure for cancer, where in a car park in Birmingham on a Sunday evening after a very inspiring conference on herbal supplements, in October 1995, I was given a small book, with a bright green cover to read called "I was Canada's Cancer Nurse" by Rene Caisse. Taking the book home with me, that night I read it from cover to cover and it was the saddest story I had ever read. The following day a gypsy came into my florist shop and asked me to buy a lucky charm - showing me three - the usual sprig of lucky heather - which isn't heather at all, it is Stattice Demosa, a lucky stone and the other was a golden coloured horseshoe with a horses head. The gypsy wanted to tell my fortune, telling me that my luck was changing etc., etc., etc., she kept pestering me to buy a lucky charm, but in the end she did leave the shop, but this was the start of an amazing roller coaster of coincidences ever! Just two days later on a Wednesday I had the day off work to go and sell my herbal supplements. Not knowing very much about network marketing, knew a fellow business man who lived in the village, and completely out of the blue called in to see him on my way home. George invited me into his home, and I explained what I had joined up to do, and did he know anything about network marketing and also told him about the herbal supplements. George told me, that if I could wait just 30mintues then he was expecting Jason, who knew more about network marketing than he did and that he maybe able to help me, adding that Jason also sold herbal supplements. When Jason arrived, and I was introduced to him, I told him about the company I had signed up with and what they did, adding that George had told me, that he may be able to help with some adive. Jason was interested, and gave me his contact details where I could contact him. However, Jason told George, that he didn't do herbal supplements anymore, as he was now selling jewellery, where by he promtly went into his case and started to show display boxes of jewellery. On opening one box I felt all the colour drain from my face, as I was looking at a gift box which consisted of a gold necklace, bracelet and brooch all depicting a horseshoe with a horses head, they were all the exact size and replica to the lucky charm that the gypsy had shown me just two days before. As I said the coincidences started like a roller coaster ride, one after the other thick and furious - was I taking any notice I am not sure! However, the book "I was Canada's Cancer Nurse" was certainly always in the forefront of my mind, and what did it mean? I became frustrated, I wanted to know more about the medicinal properties of herbs, I was already learning a lot from the herbal supplements, and how they work with the body, but I became frustrated and even more so when labelled a "lay person", that I was determined to become a professional in Natural Medicine of some kind, so that I could use the cancer herbs in the future. In May 1999, I enrolled with the International Register of Consultant Herbalists (IRCH) to train as a medical herbalist, and just one month later whilst attending my first field trip in herbal medicine, met with a fellow student who had a degree in Bio Chemistry, and who had cured herself of cancer using ESSIAC tea, (Rene Caisse name spelt backwards - it is the herbal rememdy for Cancer, as told in "I was Canada's Cancer Nurse") and asked if anyone had heard of ESSIAC apart from the tutor, I was the only one who knew all about the herbs, and told her about the formula, plus further information that she didn't know. The tutor was astounded, saying that she hadn't met anyone in the UK before who knew about ESSIAC. That was quite exciting for me, but not a coinicidence. Attending my first conference with the IRCH was astonished to find myself sitting next to Dr. John Milward at their formal dinner. Dr. Milward was one of the guest speakers at the conference the following morning. I nearly died a million deaths, as I intuitively knew that Dr. Milward would ask me what brought me to study herbal medicine with the IRCH, I really didn't want to talk about the little book I was given re: cancer herbs, as it is such a sensitive subject, but knew from my lifetime experiences that I could talk to him about anything - after all I had been an Interflora Florist (and knew that he would probably know friends of mine who would have had Interflora florist shops in his town) and on one occasion after winning the title, Interflora Florist of the Year, had many invitations up and down the counrty to demonstrate floristry, and on one occasion had been an invited guest in the Devon & Cornwall Region of Interflora to give a demonstration the following day following a formal dinner, where I had found myself sitting on the top table next to the Mayor of Torquay, who was their invited formal guest! So I could deal with Dr. Milward. Dr. Milward had been a practising GP, but because so many of his patients were very young children who had autism, took to looking into their conditions very seriously, and changed to become a natural practitioner, specialising in dealing with vacinated damaged children. His wife Vicky Milward, used to write articles in the Daily Mail on Homeopathy, I can remember seeing her articles after I enrolled with the IRCH in 1999. Dr. Milward did ask during dinner what brought me to study herbal medicine, where I simply told him -"John, shall I just say that it was a series of COINCIDENCES that lead me to the IRCH" and I simply left it at that - we went on to talk about all sorts of things and different topics, but I shall always remember the events that followed. The following day, Vicky was due on first, to talk about allergy testing, but was delayed so John came first to the podium, standing at the podium he introduced himself and his opening words were "LAST NIGHT OVER DINNER, I SAT NEXT TO CHERYL." (I nearly died - wondering what was coming next) John went on to say... "WE TALKED ABOUT COINCIDENCES, WELL I HAVE A COINCIDENCE TO SHARE WITH YOU" going into his brief case, John brought out a small bright green coloured book and held it up to the audience THE BOOK WAS "I WAS CANADA'S CANCER NURSE" by Rene Caisse, I WAS IN SHOCK! I immediately stood, and shaking said, "THIS IS AMAZING, BUT JOHN, THAT BOOK BROUGHT ME TO THE IRCH, AND I DIDN'T MENTION THAT BOOK TO YOU, WE DIDN'T TALK ABOUT THAT BOOK" John simply said, "I KNOW, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN BY COINCIDENCES". This all happened in front of a whole audience of people attending an IRCH conference!
I have had an amazingly wonderful life and have even more to be thankful to God for. Talking to my parents about this event afterwards, and the wonderful coincidences that I have experienced since 1995, my mum relayed a coincidence that occured with one of my floristry pieces that helped win my coveted title of Interflora Florist of the Year. There are some wonderful stories out there of phenominal coincidences that have happened to people - a famous one being "The Table Cloth" bringing a Jewish couple back together after many years separation during WWII. Being a very spiritual being, I believe coincidences are ANGEL MESSAGES. I had my first poiniant coincidence in 1967, when I changed careers from being a shorthand/telephonist typist to florist, possibly one to share another time. I sadly lost my father exactly a year ago this week, on the evening before his passing I was given some wonderful signs from the Angels, and my mum, husband and myself all experienced something wonderful that happened to the three of us as we came out of the hospital after we left seeing him after he had passed away, that we will remember forever.
Rene Caisse story is told in greater detail in a book entiled "CALLING OF AN ANGEL"
