Strange meeting
As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.
understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
I took my children to Germany during the half term holiday of my son's new school. As it was raining we decided to drive to a town further away to see if the weather was better. It was still raining so we went inside an Ice Cream parlour (something I would never normally do). The waiter was Indian but he recognised our English voices and told us his wife and children were in England. He said they were in Birmingham (where we live too) Then he said his twin sons had just started a new school. Lo and behold - they were at the same school as my son, and in the same class as him too!! Another time my daughter was on a school trip to Spain. Someone recognised her English voice and said he used to live in England. Not just England but Birmingham (where we live) Then he said the suburb - yes we live there too!. It turned out he had actually lived in our house many years before!
