understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Coincidences occur frequently for me so here are a few;

Some years back, my husband and I decided to change our front door and chose a fairly intricate design of stained glass with a matching side panel. Later that year we visited my sister in America and when we arrived at her house she had also changed her front door and it was exactly the same, even down to the colour of the stained glass. Neither of us had discussed changing our doors.

A couple of weeeks ago I told my husband that I would like to change our tropical fish tank to a larger one like my sister's, but I knew we would have to wait as I have had to give up working due to ill health and didn't want to spend any money unecessarily. A few days later, my sister (now living back in England) and I were speaking on the 'phone when she told me she was thinking of letting her fish tank go as she was finding it difficult with her arthric hands and her frequent holidays away. The said tank is now looking absolutely fantastic in my sitting room.

Both my boys were born at 8.25am eight years apart.

On friends reunited I couldn't understand why my name had been used in stories that I had not written.
My maiden name was Durrell, the date of birth was right as was the place of birth. Some of the stories rang true but other ones did not. It turns out that this other lady and I had more than just our names in common it was extraordinary.

My first husband was called John, he went on to marry another Janet and I married another John whose first wife was Janet.

I share so many coincidences with a close friend whom I met at astrology classes many years, that it is frightening. If the washing machine /fridge/phone /hoover/ iron or anything breaks it will happen to both of us. We had traffic accidents the same day over a hundred miles apart. The lights on both our fish tanks went the same day. We had serious illnesses at the same time that needed hospitalisation both of which have been longlasting and cause us problems to this day although they are very different illnesses. We now know that what happens to one will happen to some degree to the other. Both our daughter in laws had a cancer scare at the same time, we became grandparents to girls within a couple of months of each other. Her husband had terrible toothache to have an emergency tooth extraction and over the same period my husband's tooth broke in half and he had to have emergency treatment. The list goes on and on.
