stories of "twins"
As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.
understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
1) On Friday, June 29, 2012 - My daughter called me to talk about the death of her high school friend (a twin) at age 22 due to a tragic car accident.
2) On Wednesday, July 25, 2012 - In the morning, an old friend of mine was visiting briefly with me in my office at work and told me that he would be attending the wake for a young man who was the son of a mutual friend of ours. This young man was only 18 and died after a brave battle with cancer. He was a twin.
3) On Wednesday, July 25, 2012 - In the afternoon, my husband texted me that he had just received a phone call from someone to tell him that young woman had died- age 22, a friend of my daughter's in high school, by car accident - and a twin.
4) On Thursday, July 26, 2012 - When relating these "coincidences" to a co-worker, she indicated that she had learned about the young man's death from cancer in a conversation she had had the day before with her friend, who had just found out that her own battle with cancer was in remission. This friend of hers was also a twin, and her name triggered a notion of recognition in me, enough that I immediately zeroed in on this friend's name...and was correct.
5) On Thursday, July 26, 2012 - As it turns out, my co-worker's friend is the niece of an old boyfriend of mine who had introduced me years ago to the 18 year old's father.
6) On Thursday, July 26, 2012 - When relating this ongoing story to another co-worker, she laughed and said she could add to the saga by letting me know that, the day before, she had just had ice cream with a good friend, who has twin grandchildren.
7) Thursday, July 26, 2012 - My boss then related a brief story to me that he had just listened to a story that morning on NPR radio telling of 12 sets of twins who all went to the same school.
There are a lot of coicidences here:
-----> The "twin" theme is common throughout.
-----> My daughter was friends with 2 of the twins.
-----> Two of the twins mentioned were the same age (22).
-----> Two of the twins died by car accident.
-----> The 3 twins who died, all attended the same high school.
-----> All of the twins in the NPR story went to the same school as did the 3 twins who died.
-----> Two of the twins mentioned had been affected by cancer.
-----> Three of my co-workers (not including me !) had recently been touched in some way by annecdotes or mentionings of twins.
-----> One of the twins (whom I had never met) was connected in some way to people from my past.
This chain of events is somewhat disturbing and has never happened to me to this degree before.
