understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In 1969 my family were living in Waterlooville Hampshire and we left there to emigrate to South Africa. We lived in a small town called Pinelands, just outside Cape Town. My children went to the local school there. Coincidence 1 We read in the local paper that an ice rink was due to open in Cape Town, so my wife decided to take the children to try it out. While on the rink my wife saw a face she knew, it was a friend who she used to skate with in the Bournemouth ice skating rink in 1950's Coincidence 2 During the christmas holidays (summer) 1971 we decided to have a camping tour from Cape Town to Rhodesia as it was (Zimbabwe) driving towards the Victoria Falls we encountered a camper van coming towards us with a Cape Town registration, we waved as they went by and they stopped and found that it was a couple who belonged to the same geological club as ourselves in Capetown, neither of us knew the other was doing the trip. Coincidence 3 Having collected a number of nice mineral specimens during our stay in South Africa one of the teachers at our childrens school a Miss Turnbull asked if we could let her have a specimen to take to her brother in England. After our return to England in 1972 we lived just south of Reading we were contacted by a person who was interested in seeing our mineral specimens who lived a few miles away. On going to see this person he was showing us his collection of mineral specimens, I noticed one seemed familiar, it was the piece I had given to Miss Turnbull in Cape Town, The person I was speaking to was her brother. Conicidence 4 In May 1972 On moving into a house south of Reading we noticed that a couple opposite were waving to us. It turned out to be our old neighbours from Waterlooville, we had had no contact with them in the period we were away.
