understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
A horse fell through the roof of my garage flattening my car, 25 years later I randomly met and became good friends with the owner of the horse without realising the connection.
I come from Birmingham, in 1982 I went to University in Swansea to study zoology / psychology and in my third academic year I lived with a fellow student in a virtually derelict property called Llanerch Farm. The farm was set back a distance off the road and had stables associated with it where local kids kept horses.
Because of a severe slope the stables were on 2 levels: I kept my mini in the lower stable using it as a garage while the horse feed was kept in the upper stable. After visiting home for a weekend in early 1985 I returned to find a hole in the roof of my garage and my car roof collapsed: a horse had wandered into the feed store fallen through the rotten floorboards and landed spread eagled on it.
I thought nothing more of it, claimed on my insurance, graduated, moved back to Birmingham and then London.
In 2009 I moved with my family to The Gower, a peninsular near Swansea. Here we live next to the Greyhound pub and I became close friends with one of my neighbours who recently moved out of Swansea to set up an accommodation and leisure complex. After a year we were propping up the bar and we got talking about why I decided to move down ..... and it transpired it was his horse, Tredegar, who fell through the roof and wrote my car off.
I imagine the odds of this reunion are difficult to work out but will not be that long......
