understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
In 1990, three of us travelled to Florida on a huge plane, with three seats either side and a row of five in the centre. We shared the centre row with a couple who were going to a different final destination. We were all going away for an odd number of days.
On the return journey we found ourselves similarly sharing a row of five.
