understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
My dad used to take me swimming every Sunday in Salford, Manchester. One Sunday, we came across two pound coins on the pavement, one sitting half on the other one and half on the ground. I remember bending down to check they were real and was made up when dad said I could have them. The following Sunday, we set off for Broughton baths again. In the exact same place, in our path were two pound coins in the same position, one half placed on the other one. If they'd been dropped, they would have landed apart, it was as though someone had carefully placed them there for us. It was like time repeating itself. We hoped it would happen again but it never did.
Another coincidence involved my dad. He stopped to chat to a guy who lived on the corner of our street one day, a gentle giant who I remember had a kind face. They were about to go their separate ways when the man suddenly said to my dad oh I nearly forgot to give you this, and handed my dad a packet of fruit pastilles, and walked away before my dad could say anything to him. Dad thought it was very strange but put them in his pocket anyway. Later that day he went to visit my gran who was in a care home at that time. Dad used to always ask before he left if she wanted anything bringing. On this day gran told him 'you know I could murder some fruit pastilles' and asked him to bring some the next day. He was about to say that he would when he remembered his friends surprise gift. So he gave them to gran and told her how he had got them. He never got to ask the man why he had given him the sweets that day and we then heard he had died soon after. Me and my dad often reminisced about these events and tried to figure them out to no avail!
