understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

1. We were a golf society visiting St Neots golf course, and a friend said I didn't realise you were a member here. I replied, no I'm not, He said come and look at this and he showed the list of members and their handicaps, there it was:- A.J.Hardie.. handicap 11.. I was A.J.Hardie ..handicap 11 unfortunately I didn't follow this up. 2. Visiting Ostend I noticed some teenagers walking around in school uniform which looked vaguely familiar. On closer inspection it turned out to be my old school uniform Peterhead Academy Aberdeenshire, Scotland. 3. On holiday in Cornwall, walking thro Mevagissy, I came face to face with one of my golfing partners and his wife, neither of us had said anything about holidaying in Cornwall 4. Returning from holiday in Corfu, In the Departure lounge at 0300am we bumped into dog walking friends from our street. 5.Caught the train from Kings Cross to Aberdeen taking my fiancee to meet my mother in the N.E of Scotland- these were the days of compartment trains and there was only one other person in our compartment. For some reason or other I felt an affinity to her but she was engrossed in her book and I didn't want to disturb her. When she went to the toilet I took the opportunity to look at her luggage label. She came from Ellon where I was born and my paternal grandparents lived and she turned out to be a second cousin, who I hadn't seen since we were about 3 or 4 6. While in the R.A.F I was stationed at RAF Watton in Norfolk, people who served there kept talking about a certain person who seemed to be the life and soul of the party and was loved by all but he had been posted to Cyprus just before I arrived. The following year, after I had left the R.A.F, I had returned to Norwich to see my fiancee and was staying in the Station Hotel in Norwich. After breakfast one day, I was reading the paper in the lounge when I noticed the young woman opposite was wearing an R.A.F scarf, this obviously started the conversation. She was a Greek Cypriot who had married the fellow I'd missed at RAF Watton and they were returning to England. My fiancee and I had many happy meals with them, and he really was a nice chap.
