understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
About 20 years ago I spent New Year in the Lake District with 2 friends. Whilst in a car park in Coniston, I thought I saw a friend from University (Phil Bischler) at the far side of the car park. I walked purposefully towards him but as he turned towards me to see who was approaching, I realised that it wasn't Phil but by this time was so close that I had to explain my approach. That evening, we stayed at Ambleside Youth Hostel. I thought I saw Phil Bischler sitting in the common room on a sofa reading a magazine. This time I was more circumspect and walked up and down the common room (he was reading, oblivious). Finally I had the courage to call out 'Phil ?'. It WAS Phil Bischler this time.
(Strangely, something similar happened a couple of months later in Redhill. I thought I saw one of my sister's friends (Juliet Smith) approaching but it wasn't. A few seconds later, Juliet Smith came round the corner. This was less improbable as she lived locally. Nothing like this has happened to me since)
