understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Two years ago i attended a cocktail party in Sandbanks - and during the course of the party got chatting to a guy who i have known for many years, but would not class as a close friend. We only met occasionally - he spent 20 minutes or so telling me about his passion of shooting especially pheasant and game. i told him it wasn't up my street. 6 months later whilst walking in the Gloucester hills, i turned a corner and disturbed a large number of pheasants which all took off at the same time. i turned to a family member and said "Crikey, that chap Tim we met in Poole would love it here" at which point my mobile phone rang and a voice said "John, sorry to trouble you, I got your number from Jeff ( a mutual friend) it's Tim here - I need some advice on a car" I said "i can't believe this Tim - I have just been talking about you we are surrounded by pheasants in the Gloucestershire hills" It was very spooky - i have never before or since had any phone communication with Tim in my life!
