understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
When I was a teenager I went travelling by train through Europe with a schoolfriend called Steven. This was during the Summer and we had a so-called Interrail Pass, permitting us to travel on most trains anywhere in Europe. Steven and I ended up in Spain and Portugal where we met an American guy called Eddy. He was a bit of a wild and odd character, and he persuaded us to take the train with him all the way to Munich to experience the Oktober Fest. So we did, we all got drunk etc. and after a few eventful days our ways parted. We exchanged telephone numbers but never got in touch. Years later I was living in a student flat in Brussels when I called my mother to say hi. She explained that my brother Peter, who's 5 years older than me, had brought a friend over whom he met whilst travelling in Poland about a year ago. My mother explained that his name was Eddy, that he was staying in my room and asked if I didn't mind. I said that, of course, I didn't mind and forgot about it.Then a day later Steven called me: "Guess who's in town?!". He told me that Eddy had called him out of the blue, that he was in town and staying with a family. First I thought, what a coincidence to have my brother having a friend over called Eddy, and we too. Then I started to wonder, what if he's one and the same guy? When we finally met, my brother's 'Eddy' and our 'Eddy' turned out to be one and the same person indeed. He had been sleeping in my room for a week without me realising it. When Eddy realised that Peter and I were brothers, he couldn't believe the odds...
