understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My name is John I. A couple of years ago I was working on a project with partners in Barcelona. I would travel there on 2-3 occasions each year. During one visit I was booked into a hotel in the City Centre. When I went to reception to book in there I was given the pass card to my room. However, when I went to the room I found that it was occupied by a very pretty young lady and her boyfriend, whose name was .... John I. I is not a totally rare surname - probably a few 1,000 people in the UK. To my knowledge the other John I had no close relationship to me. I am orginally from the North East of England, County Durham, and the second John I was from Middlesborough in North Yorkshire. However, what is the chance of two unrelated people with the same name travelling to a foreign destination and both booking into the same hotel on the same evening! Comments please!
