Not so eerie but left us with a strange feeling

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

On a road trip in Colombia, South America, with a cousin, I got the driver's seat for a short while because my cousin had been driving for a long time and needed to rest. It was dark, the terrible road had many potholes that you had to sort out by driving fast avoiding the largest and hitting the rest. Not long after I was driving I turned right on a fork and about half mile later I hit a pothole so badly that it busted the right hand side front tire and damaged the back one as well. We got out and started to change the tires, luckily my cousin had a pump to fill the back tire until we could get somewhere. Suddenly, out of nowhere comes a jeep. If you know that part of the country, you should know that no one stops to help people because it can be very dangerous. At that time, you would have gotten mugged or robbed or kidnapped. An any rate, the guy seemed very nice, like a peasant. We didn't ask him to stop. He just stopped, rolled down his window and asked us where we were heading. When we told him where (the town of Neiva) he replied: "Turn back and at the fork take a right". Before we had time to say anything he rolled up his window and was gone. Now the strange thing of what happened is that after he left I told my cousin, that guy was nice but had very strange piercing eyes. My cousin agreed. We simply went back, fixed the tire and reached our destination. When we got back home after a long weekend and told the story to a relative, she said, the area where you were heading is full of guerrillas, it must have been an angel sent to you. (Guerrillas are bands of irregular and illegal soldiers that engage in guerrilla warfare, harassing people, kidnapping and now a days trafficking with drugs). When she said that to us, I remember the eyes of the 'peasant' and it made sense to me that i could now explain that strange event as something supernatural. It might have been a coincidence, and it could have been some God taking care of us. All I know is that it was a nice guy helping us that by chance or by destiny helped us where not many people stop to help and helped us avoid an area where things could have gone very wrong. Too bad I don't have an answer to what really happened.
