understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My husband & I were in Ireland 2 weeks ago and went to visit his seriously ill cousin who had been transferred from Limerick Hsp to the Mater Hsp in Dublin. When we arrived at the ward we were told he had gone for a an MRI scan and therefore couldn't see him. Walking towards us was smiling Nigerian woman in some sort of nurse uniform, who approached me saying 'Margaret's sister'? It turned out she was Mitchelle one of my late sister Margaret's home carers. Margaret died nearly 2 years ago and Mitchelle was the last person to see her at home before she died. My sister lived in Dundalk 60 miles from Dublin. My husbands cousin and my siater have never met. I had met Mitchelle only once before, just after Margaret's death when she came to the house to tearfully related my sister's decline. Hugging her, we were able to ask her to give my husband's cousin our love and good wishes. She became our ambassador.
