Nextdoor neighbours cross paths

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
My partner and I were flying en route to France from Australia via Hong Kong. We decided to have a 3 day break there and spent the time touring, walking and shopping using ferries and taxis. One day we went to Kowloon and did lots of walking through the parks and shops. There were hordes of people everywhere.
We went into this huge shopping centre, browsing various shops. As we about to ascend the escalator for the next floor, I saw our next door neighbours from Australia getting off the adjacent escalator. They were on a world cruise spending one day in Hong Kong. Neither of us knew that the other was travelling.
I find that the narrow common time in Hong Kong and the chance of crossing paths in such a megalopolis quite extraordinary. We couldn't quite believe it happened. We still are in awe of the event 5 years later.
