New York shock

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In October 2007 I was in New York celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary with my new husband and children (by my ex-husband). We were in Macy's doing some shopping when we bumped into my ex-husband's cousin and aunt, who live about 3 miles away from us at home. What are the chances of us being in New York at the same time, let alone being in Macys (one of the largest department stores in the world) on the same day, same time, same floor, same dept....
