understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
I took a course and the person that partnered up with me for discussion purposes, seemed similar to me in the male form. After that course, I would see him once in a while at other meetings, and if at these meetings we were split up into groups which we had no hand in deciding, we would be put in the same group. After a year or 2, I ran into him at all different times in all different places, sometimes once a week for 3 weeks, sometimes once every 3 weeks for about 3 or 4 times but after times like that, would not run into him again for 6 months or more. Then it would repeat, sometimes he was by himself, sometimes just with his daughters, and sometimes with his wife and sometimes with all of them. Three of the most bizzare occurances were; one morning, earlier than the store was supposed to open because of a sale, I was there buying a new shirt for an upcoming vacation. I turned around and he was also there buying something for his wife..an hour earlier than the store was supposed to open. Another was when I saw he and his family in a store, then at a mall nearby. I was with my daughters. After about 2 hours we were leaving, lined up with other cars to pull out of the mall. My daughter looked over and he and his family were in the car next to us! Usually some time passes before we run into each other again, and then it will be 3 to 4 meetings with sometimes only days in-between, or sometimes weeks, but usually at an odd time of day or in a spot that I wouldn't think we would run into each other. Once, I was calling my finicky-eating daughter to find out which pizza she wanted me to by. It was after dinner time. I was looking into the cooler, and heard a familiar voice. I looked up and he was about 3 feet away from me on the phone asking his finicky-eating daughter what chicken fingers she wanted him to get her!! When he saw me, he just shook his head and smiled. We have both thought that our chance meetings are bizzare, and his family and mine feel the same. We all chuckle about it but it seems so strange to me. He is a great guy, and it's obvious he loves his wife and kids. This has been going on for @ 10 years.
