understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
I was making polite conversation with a male co-worker from the large London open plan office we both work in whilst the kettle boiled in the shared kitchen where I work. Gazing out of the window at the sunny day we remarked how glorious it was and that it was only going to get better over the weekend. I mentioned I was going to Strasbourg the next day. ‘That’s funny’ the man said, ‘my mother is also going to Strasbourg tomorrow’. He added that his mother was going to a wedding to which I remarked "I'm going to a wedding too - isn't that strange?" ‘Are you going to Paul Wilson’s wedding?’ he asked. I was stunned, I am Paul Wilson’s stepmother and his mother was Paul Wilson’s mother’s best friend and he had known Paul for much of his childhood.
